Four Communities Fire Department Turns 75 Years Old!
In 1951, a group of area residents got together to form a fire department to become known as Four Communities Fire Department. They had been using spray trucks and tankers that were used in the Groves and other places in the area to fight brush and structural fires. They also used pickaxes, shovels and fire extinguishers to control fires
Charlie Williams donated the land where the station sits on US1 and River Rd. People donated so that the building could be bought. Later on, additional land was purchased. This station was built without the use of any Brevard County funds. A fire district was issued by the State of Florida. The response area was from the Indian River to the St. Johns River, to south of where State Road 528 is now. The north boundary was just past where Kings Hwy. in Port St. John is currently.
Four Communities became part of District One Fire Control. In 1984, Brevard County Fire Dept. became a county wide agency with Four Communities and other volunteer agencies that were still separate entities, but were a part of the county system.
In 1984, there was a fire station built in Port St. John (26). In 1993, the Canaveral Groves station 29 was built. These stations were added due to the area expansion.
Over the years, many people have volunteered in helping the community and many of them became volunteer firefighters.
Four Communities fire department still has to respond to calls as needed. They also assist Brevard County Sherriff's Office with refilling their dive tanks.
Stop down any Tuesday night and you will be able to see them training. And if you are interested, please volunteer your services. There is no better feeling than saving people's property and lives.
